We believe:
Dawson Settlement Baptist Church has been serving our community for more than 170 years. In 1852, a group of residents from Dawson Settlement left the First United Baptist Church in Hillsborough to establish a local congregation, originally known as the Second Hillsborough Baptist Church. The first church building was constructed on the same site where our church stands today. As the congregation grew, a new sanctuary was built in 1886, followed by the addition of a parsonage in 1895. Between 1913 and 1918, the church underwent significant improvements, including the installation of heating, new siding and roofing, culminating in a service of rededication. Although the exact date is unknown, the congregation eventually became known as Dawson Settlement Baptist Church.
Over the years, it served as the lead church for a ministry field that included Baltimore and Caledonia Mountain. For a brief period in 1908, Albert Mines and Surrey were also part of the field. Around 1910, the field included the churches of Dawson Settlement, Baltimore, Caledonia, Turtle Creek, Berryton, and Nixon. As communities changed over time, some of these churches eventually closed. The church has continued to grow and adapt throughout its history. A basement was added, ministries expanded, and the congregation remained committed to serving both God and the surrounding community. In 2014, we dedicated a major addition to our historic church building after more than a century of faithful use. This expansion provides welcoming space for worship, fellowship, church ministries, and community events. Today, it continues to be a place where we gather to celebrate God's faithfulness, support one another, and serve our neighbours.
